Corvallis/Central Linn Invitational

Corvallis/Central Linn Invitational

Dear Forensics Director:

Though it's a little later this year, the Corvallis and Central Linn speech and debate teams are VERY pleased to announce the return of our annual tournament!  With my new teaching position this year, I was unable to coordinate the tournament properly early on.  Now that I'm a bit more settled, I hope to offer the same wonderful tournament so well-attended by Oregon teams that you have all been used to!

We will be holding the tournament at a location to be decided. More information on the way!

I'm incredibly excited to be able to host this tournament again. I've had a great time with all of you and your students in years past.  So, I hope to see all of the familiar faces and the many new ones on the circuit this year!

Sincerely,

Danielle Robertson
Director of Forensics
Corvallis High School

Location + Accommodations/Food

While the location is TBA, the Corvallis tournament always provides pizza at 11:15A and 1:15P, as well as Subway sandwiches. Other concessions offered are muffins, fruit, chips, cookies, soda, water, and even a few debate supplies (pens, pencils, flow paper...for the forgetful student).

For schools who have a ways to travel on Saturday morning, the city of Corvallis offers many highly affordable options. Corvallis rooms begin at between 55.00 and 70.00 per night, and we may even be able to arrange home stays for kids if given enough notice! Rooms in Albany, only 10 minutes away, are also very inexpensive! Please contact me for me information, as I am a class-A hotel shopper!

Events

The tournament will offer the following events: CX, LD, Public, Public Forum, ELL, Expository, Extemp, Impromptu, Radio, Oratory, Poetry, Prose, DI, HI, ADS, and Duo (basically, everything!)

Rules

All events will follow the state rules for competition, with the following exceptions:

IE’s:
    1. Double entries will be allowed in either pattern. Please no triple entries in one pattern!
    2. Entrants should be placed in the appropriate division, but we reserve the right to collapse as
    necessary.

Debate:
  1. Dictionaries may be used in preparation for Public rounds, as well as extemp tubs.  However, articles should not be specifically cited in round (i.e. no quotations in round).  We will release a list of possible public topic areas no later than one week prior to the tournament, allowing for some research.
  2. Prep times/Down times for the debates are as follows: C-X: 5 minutes, L-D: 3 minutes, Public: 15 minutes.
  3. Five “Maverick” (single-person) entries per school are allowed in C-X, Public, and PF debate.- THIS IS AN INCREASE FROM PREVIOUS YEARS
  4. Competitors should be entered in the appropriate division.
  5. We will allow laptops in LD debate and Policy Debate for flowing/note taking only (a connection to the internet or research software is prohibited). If teams read evidence from their computer they must also have a printed copy available for the other team to look over.
  6. My intention is to offer LIMITED oral critiques during debate rounds, because most students say that is where they learn the most. Therefore, any debate judge may give oral critiques, and in fact is ENCOURAGED to, but the critique may not exceed 15 minutes. If you have a CX ballot, be mindful of the TIME!
